Color Changing Resins

Color changing resin is a kind of cation exchange resin or anion exchange resin with indicator. It can not only exchange reaction with cations or anions in the water, but also because of the obvious color difference between the regenerative type and the invalid type, it is very easy to distinguish, thus facilitating the operation and control of on-site personnel. Among them, the color-changing cationic resin can be mainly used to monitor the positive conductivity of the effluent of the mixed bed for steam and condensate treatment. The resin is packed in a small exchange column, and the trace minerals in the water are converted into acid by the resin exchange, which greatly improves the sensitivity of monitoring the cations in the water. When the resin fails, it changes to another color, which clearly indicates the working status of the exchange column. In addition, the color-changing cationic resin can also be installed in a small-diameter transparent mixed-bed exchange column with the color-changing cationic resin or common strong alkaline anionic resin as a mixed-bed resin with indicator.


Salicylic acid-o-aminobenzoic acid (SABA) is a Schiff base that has been used as a luminescent reagent and applied for the fluorescence spectrophotometric determination of heavy metal ions. By chemically bonding SABA on the surface of cross-linked polystyrene porous beads via quaternary ammonium units, the synthesized resin can be used both as a luminescent material for the detection of heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions and as an extractant for the separation and preconcentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater in solid phase extraction (SPE). At the same time the resin is easily transformed into a new amphoteric resin when washed with distilled water. This amphoteric resin not only takes full advantage of the easy regeneration of the conventional resin in alkaline eluent, but also exhibits some distinctive properties, such as high electrostatic density.(Tian-lin Zhang,et al., 2013)

Molybdenum and arsenate form a so-called heteropoly acid, which produces a strong blue color under reducing conditions. Since the development of this blue color is very stable and corresponds to the concentration of arsenate ions, it is often used for the determination of arsenic. The chelating resin with amino polyol functional group can be used for the adsorption and detection of arsenic due to its multidentate structure and strong affinity for molybdenum.( Matsunaga H,et al.,2005)
