Ionic Resins for Pharmaceutical Industry

Alfa Chemistry focuses on expanding the application fields of ion exchange resins, constantly combining ion exchange technology with cutting-edge technology to create new products. Alfa Chemistry's ion exchange resins are mainly used for the separation and purification of antibiotics, vitamins, natural products and biochemical drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. In recent years, with the interpenetration of pharmaceutics and various disciplines, ion exchange resins have gradually been used in the research and development of drug delivery systems.

Ion exchange resins are a kind of powder with good fluidity. They are insoluble in all solvents and under any pH conditions, and are not absorbed by the body, so they are not toxic. Ion exchange resins can exchange not only small inorganic ions in the solution, but also organic ions with larger molecular weights (such as ionic drugs). The environment of the drug and resin, including the pKa value, molecular weight, solubility, concentration of competing ions and the temperature of the solution, will affect the equilibrium point of the ion exchange reaction.

Antibiotic

In the fermentation broth, the concentration of antibiotics is very low, the solvent consumption is high during extraction, and the efficiency is low. The ion exchange resin can be used to selectively adsorb and separate a variety of ionic antibiotics, which not only has a high recovery rate, but also has a good product purity.

Proteins, enzymes and peptides

Proteins, enzymes and peptides are biopolymers formed by the condensation of α-amino acids. Because certain amino acid residues contain carboxyl groups or bases, these biopolymers become amphiphilic substances. Proteins and enzymes are unstable under strong acid or strong base conditions, and strong hydrophobic effect will denature them. Therefore, the resin used should be hydrophilic weak acid resin or weak base resin.

Amino acid

Amino acids are amphoteric compounds, containing amino groups that can form positive ions and carboxyl groups that can form negative ions. Therefore, both cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin can be used for separation and purification.

Drug delivery system

The drug-loaded resin is called a drug-resin complex. The dissociated drug must first be dissolved in water, and then an appropriate ion exchange resin must be added and mixed together. The active drug is adsorbed on the resin through ion exchange, then filtered to remove water, and dried to obtain a drug-resin complex. The properties of the drug resin composite are very similar to those of the original ion exchange resin, and both have good fluidity and similar particle size, and can be further processed and prepared. In recent years, pharmaceutical resin composite materials have been widely used in many aspects of pharmaceutical preparations.
